Great film. I saw it already a while ago in the Netherlands (Multipleks, Leiden) and was wondering how the Situationist group, of which a couple of people are in the movie, is called. Thanks in advance and good luck.

Sorry for the delay- we got bogged down in spam for awhile!
The "Situationaist" group is referred to "Los Situaciones" or
"Colectivo Situaciones" I think more properly. You can read about them here http://www.all4all.org/2004/11/1233.shtml

HI I am doing a project on the relations and differences between First Person Film and Activist Film. I was wondering where your sense of 'othering' is portraid in the film, if you the makers are the other or who? Also I would like to know how the film addresses the 'I' as in reflexive?

What's the music used in the background of the trailer, which I found on YouTube (2 mins 6 seconds long I think)? I really enjoyed it.

Slightly related, I volunteer on an Indymedia radio show in London and felt the trailer could even be a suitable intro piece to the show with your permission of course.

Really looking forward to seeing the movie, am going to buy a dvd in the next week or two when my pay comes through.

Feel free to use the trailer however you would like..The music is most likely by the Argentine "Juana Molina" her stuff is avaliable in the US now, and if you go to her website there is alot of information about her. She gave us several tracks for the film and is a wonderfull person. Sorry for the delay on the approvals- this form gets spammed and if we dont go through the messages one by one, it would be an ugly place to have a conversation....

In the beginning of the film it is stressed that the vision of indymedia is an all volunteer network, yet in the credits UC and NYC are thanked, both of which have paid positions. Do you think this discredits the vision put forth in the movie since you clearly relied on resources from imc's that are more focused on money, both raising money and paying people?

Submitted by raphihell on Sat, 2006-12-16 08:26.

we thanked these two indymedias for different reasons- I spent weeks if not months sleeping in the NY indymedia when I had no other place to edit the film. The fact that the NY indymedia was organized the way it was allowed them to have a physical space, allowed us to edit the film and I wish I could thank them more. Not to mention many of them appear in the film.

They never gave us any money if that is what you mean by "resources."

The UCIMC never gave us any money either, but it offered to lend its non profit legal status to help us try and raise money in a traditional way. Incidentally we are horrible fundraisers and no one wanted to give us any money for an radical art documentary. So it was sort of a moot point.

As far as working with these two organizations, In no way do I think it discredits the film. The point, if there is any in "i"- is to celebrate a decentralized stratedgy in tackling problems, and to try an argue that the kind of thinking which says "I know the best and most radical way to solve problems" is dangerous. SO while I dont think the more conservative wings of indymedia are necessarily the best way for every group to organize itself. I do feel strongly that a healthy network has a full spectrum of approaches- from those that use the internet and computers to those that use micro radio's and wheat past flyers- and from those that have a structure that is trying to deal honestly with the problem of using money in a radical way to those who feel it is safer to avoid it all together. What do you think?

another screening of i the film in S.korea!

screening of i the film in Jeonju-city(middle-west side).
hosted by Jeonju citizen media center "0simi"
and i was there, too, to have a talk/lecture about the film and how the independent media movements go.

there were about 15 people attending to watch i the film.
below are comments, question and request the audiences addressed.

- I got to think again about what the poistive audience sitting back mean.
- I have usually watched commercial movies. i never see this kind of movie. strange but interesting.
- more or less scattered composition.
- question: what does "i" mean? (so i insteadlly answer that.)
- question: (right after screening, i gave a short explanation of what IMC emerged and developed, including internal problems.) what are the problems IMCs have?
- And request for the title(name) or file(if it's possible) of the last music at the end of film. it sounds techno-style.

As for request for music especially, can you let me know what's the name of it, and can you send the music file if it's ok with you?

i'll get you some photos soon.

hi folks!

...consider making a .torrent of the film and SHARE it...

that means nearly maximum spreading at zero costs!

suggest after 1.) having it on a hdd
and 2.) get it processed (e.g. with µTorrent) thus automatically got a checksum and a lot of chunks of) it
you 3.) announce it via a board like www.thepiratebay.org at a tracker

and everyone could share it!!

just remember: do always seed more than you leech

(if you needed help -send it to me -i'll do it... thomas@biopilze.de)

I am not sure exactly what you are asking about- but if you want to send the directors a personal question about distribution or screenings- use the contact form on the contact link to the right.
Thanks!

raphihell- just wanted to thank you again for coming to st louis and sharing this film with us. i loved the complexity and detail, and it will give me a lot to think about philosophically. but more importantly, at least for me, was that it wasn't trying to sell indymedia as a concept, brand, or a meme, but instead shows indymedia as a reflection of the specific needs and talents of the different areas it has popped up into. and i loved all the personal stories that really remind me of what the whole point of having a grassroots voice is really about.

keep up the good work! (and thanks for the piano jams)

Hi! Great project and a treat just to watch the trailer!

In those kind of "speakers tour", i feel that organisations come prety close but never reach eastern Canada. I can't tell for elsewhere, but Montreal and Quebec city would gladly welcome such a tour. Our new social center-cafe would be the perfect place! Screenings could also be organised more norther etc...We will order the dvd any ways...Extra challenge: some french subtitles are great to reach activists and people around here.

Please make contacts with Canada, too. By the way, I hope you're planning to go see our Argentinean friends too!

Thanks for your work, can't wait to see the movie!

i the movie was screened last night at Darling Hall in Milwaukee. The filmmakers were on hand and the folks in the audience were treated to quite an eye-opener. Not just in the content and direction, but also in the innovative delivery... the mirror, microscope, telescope concept really helped to unite the whole picture to the on-the-ground actions. Congratulations on a job very well-done! Lets not digress from our fight for truth in these interesting times. On-On!

why is a movie about indymedia, which gaves himself the image as it is an indymedia-movie, not inside the indymedia-network?
since there exists projects like video.indymedia.org it should be possible to load it up there, so that every imc worldwide could watch, play and redistribute it - and more, translate it into other languages?

this sux, money sux!
a frustrated indy-activist, who does not have 20 dollar for a movie...

This is a good thought and something we have wrestled with over the course of thinking about distribution.

Firstly, at least in the short term we have decided that making the film available for download encourages people to watch this film, at home- alone on the computer. We feel that the importance of making of film is to bring together people in a physical setting in a group.

On the other hand it is important to us that people who really want to see this film - they should be able to do so without having 20 dollars.
To us "free" download means free if you own a computer, the latest software and a high speed line.
Our experiment, we hope, in the long run will be more democratic.

The Decentralized screenings infrastructure should allow you to get the film for free, on the condition you try and collect some donations and you share the burden of costs of this project, not just with your friends who come over- but with everyone who does a screening.
We are hoping that funds from screenings in the Global North should be able to offset the costs of screenings elsewhere. The goal is a sustainable model of distribution that relies on people's ability to call their friends together around a tv, or at a video projector in a coffee house rather than using the internet. If anything we are encouraging people to use these as fundraising oportunities to allow them to bring other films there in the future.

What this boils down to is this:
We would be happy to send you the film if you are willing to call up a dozen people and ask them to come over and watch it with you. I am sure they can all chip in the price of a beer to make this project work for everyone everywhere.

Check into the "Decentralized Screenings" link for more info on how to do this.
!
Raphael
PS- as far as translation goes- we are all for it. If you would like to help make a translation for a language you do not see there- tell us and we can facilitate it. We are using a system which allows all the translation to be done entirely in a text file- so no video editing equipment is needed.

Applaud from Scotland!

This visually and intellectually stimulating film explains about indymedia in a beautifully poetic way. In our contemporary global culture of mass media "i" explores the important, universal issue of the relationship between documentation and existence in both political and philosophical terms - history will no longer be written by the powerful elite! - well done to all!

Looking forward to screening "i" in October!!

As it turns out we are more intersted in talking to people abou their thoughts on the film then what we are up to day to day. With that in mind we are opening up this section- now called "Conversation" to everyone.
Please share YOUR thoughts about the film and allow us to answer questions here.
Just hit "comment" and it will be posted for the world to see! We will try and check in as often as possible.
